Habitat Help! – 4677

Summary

Students researched a favorite animal and its habitat. Each group used a website to build/create an animal that would thrive in its habitat. Using Pixie students created videos to share the problems the animal habitats face today. These videos were published on the class blog where students, faculty/staff, and parents were able to make comments. Students were also challenged to use problem solving skills and research to find solutions to this growing global issue (protecting the environment.

TIPC Ratings

Teacher and media specialist modeled effective methods of research to solve an authentic global issue. Students used digital tools to investigate and gather research throughout the project (i.e. One Search, Ask Kids, Pebble Go!, PBS Kids, Online Britannica, nonfiction books, encyclopedias, and magazines)

Teacher facilitated student discussions throughout the project giving students opportunities to engage in collaborative efforts to solve a global problem using class blog, Google Docs, and teamwork in partners/groups.

Teacher facilitated conversations to guide students through problem solving and thinking critically about a real world problem (habitat destruction). Students used problem solving skills as they researched, worked collaboratively, and communicated potential real world solutions.

The teacher and ITRT modeled available technologies for students throughout the project. Teacher facilitated research, questioning, problem solving, and product creation. Teacher also gave students the opportunity to evaluate and self-assess using digital tools (Photo Booth, Pixie, Garage Band) and to also suggest projects for future units of study.
