Glance at a Golden Week 1.27-1.31

Bitmoji ImageHot diggity! Friday is here!

It was another short week for us, but we sure did pack a lot into these 4 days.

Our first field trip of the year was on Thursday! Students enjoyed exploring, imagining, creating, and playing through all the different exhibts at the Children’s Museum. We followed all of the activity up with a lesson on Economics. Students learned the differences between needs/wants, goods/services, and producers/conumers. We wrapped up our lesson by creating our own imaginary product to sell. It was a great day and we learned so much! Check out many more photos of our adventures here!

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- This week our comprehension focus was on retelling stories and understanding sequence within a story. Thinking about what happened at the beginning (characters/setting), middle (problem/what’s happening), and end (resolution). Students also practiced locating answers to questions within the text. Writing- Students had the opportunity to work with homophones (words that sound the same but have different meaning and spellings), prefixes (word parts that change the meanins of root words), and contractions (word or phrase that has been shortened by dropping one or more letters). We will continue to explore these words in our reading and upcoming spelling words.Math- The focus this week remained on 2 digit computation, problem solving, and review of content previously taught. Students estimated sums and differences, computed sums and differences, and used these skills to solve one and two step word problems. We’ll work to review skills taught over the first semester next week to prepare for the benchmark exam, scheduled for Feb 6-7.

Science- We wrapped up our adaptation unit with an animal research project! After previewing some texts on adaptations, students selected an animal and reserached their habitat, shelter, how they adapt to their environment (camouflage/ migration/ hibernation), what they eat, and why they think their adaptation is helpful. Once finished with their research, they used what they found to write a paragraph on their animal. A final paper was typed with a photo of their animal. I am so impressed and proud of the work students put into this assignment…they turned out so well! They are currently displayed in the hallway and we would love to show them off to you this Thursday during our conference night!
