Glance at a Golden Week (10.23-10.27)

We had a blast during International Day this week! We spent our morning meeting sharing our heritages, describing special traditions, and sampling delicious foods from various cultures. It was a wonderful way to learn about our differences and celebrate what makes us each unique. Thank you so much to Samantha, Roselyn, and Niroj for bringing in some delicious treats for us all to enjoy! Afterwards, we gathered to see and participate in dances from around the world. Be sure to check out photos from our day!

An additional thank you to all families who donated food to the teachers lounge for International Day as well! We are very appreciative of all that was brought in and certainly felt VERY spoiled!

More excitement is in store for us in the upcoming week as we prepare for our first field trip to the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, spirit week, and our Reading benchmark test.

THIS WEEK IN…

Reading– We revisited studying Main Idea this week and learned how to apply it to non fiction text. We used a strategy called Shrink a Text to  write one to two sentences about each section of text in our StoryWorks articles. When finding the main idea in non fiction texts, ask your child What is the main idea of your text? What details in the book support the main idea? What would make another good title for this article? What is the text about? What are some of the key details in the text?  How did you decide that these details are important?

We reviewed the meaning of synonyms (same) and antonyms (opposite). We applied our knowledge of synonyms and antonyms to our vocabulary words in whole group and small group reading.

Writing– We went to the library this week to begin our research writing prompt. We will be taking the information gathered from our trip to write an informational passage on an animal of our choice from the ocean ecosystem.

We also started thinking about writing to entertain this week. We read a story titled “Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street” to help us understand how we can take a simple story and turn it into an exciting, entertaining story. The characters in the story remind us that when we are writing we should add details, ask “what if”, and add a little spice by stretching the truth. Be on the look out for our own spin on this story as we put together “Nothing Ever Happens at Trevvett”! When writing, ask your child How does an author write to entertain? What senses do you use to describe characters? What are the elements of a story? How can you make a story more exciting?

Social Studies–  This week had us looking at Civil War battles that occured in Henrico County. We learned about battles that occured at Seven Pines and Yellow Tavern and how the South surrendered Richmond at the city capitol. When reviewing, ask your child How did some events prior to and during the Civil War affect Henrico county?
