Glance at a Golden Week (10.30-11.3)

This week was one for the books! We had an AMAZING time and created memories that will last a lifetime on our field trip to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center yesterday. We started our trip with a great lesson on the ocean. Through exploration in stations we got to…

  • test the water salinity of fresh water, brackish water, and salt water;
  • test to see how many times our hand would land on water/land while tossing a globe;
  • graph and plot ocean depth; and
  • put together a puzzle of the ocean floor.

Students discussed the ocean zones and the adaptations animals in those zones have for survival. Some of us demonstrated these adaptations first hand!

Afterwards, we were off to explore the many exhibits of the aquarium! Be sure to check out all of the photos on Google Drive! If you chaperoned and took pictures, please email/remind them to me and I’ll be happy to add them to our Google photo file!

THIS WEEK IN…

                Reading– We continued our unit on determining the main idea of nonfiction text.  We are making great use of our time with nonfiction text to further our learning in Science, as we read passages about rocks and oceans. This week we worked on “cracking the heading”. First students identified the headings in the text and used this information to make a prediction about what the main idea would be. After reading the text, students wrote a sentence or two about what they just read. Using this information, we then wrote a NEW heading for each section. Using this strategy really helped us zero in on what the author wants us to understand the most. When reading nonfiction text with your student, ask them What is the main idea of your text? What details in the book support the main idea? What is the main idea of this paragraph? What would make another good title for this article?

                Writing– We put teamwork to the test this week as we worked to review all of the writing skills we have learned to date…runons,  fragmentscontractions, and double negatives. First students worked together to become masters of one writing skill. They created their own anchor charts and used them to teach the class their skill. Using this information, we regrouped and wrote a paragraph FULL of these errors so that our peers could find them and fix them. When reviewing writing skills at home, ask your student What is a contraction? What is a possessive? What is a run-on sentence? What is a fragment? What is a double negative? What are the components of a complete sentence?

                Social Studies– We wrapped up our unit on Henrico History by learning how tobacco was an important cash crop for the citie of Henricus. When discuss Henrico history with your student, ask What effect did agriculture have on the Henrico economy?

                Math & Science–  Visit Miss Capano’s blog to read what students did in math and science this week!
