Glance at a Golden Week (10.16-10.20)

We’ve got so many FUN events coming up on Tuesday next week!

During the school day we will be celebrating International Day!Students are invited to  bring in items that represent their nationality. Some students in our room have signed up to bring food from their culture…YUM! Permission forms went home yesterday in daily folders to give students permission to eat any food that may be brought in to our room. We will take time during our morning meeting to discuss and share our cultures. An International Day assembly will follow, where we will learn different dances from cultures that represent our school.

After a fun day of learning about different cultures, we will be hosting our Papa John’s Teacher Delivery Night! Take a load off, order a pizza, and let us bring dinner to your door on Tuesday, October 24th! In this FUNdraiser, Trevvett will receive 20% of the pizza sale proceeds and 100% of the tips! Click the link to order your pizza before Monday, October 23rd at midnight. If 60% of our class orders a pizza, we will earn a pizza party! I hope I get to deliver a pizza to YOU on Tuesday! 🙂

THIS WEEK IN…

Reading– We are putting our StoryWorks subscription to good use this week as we explored more nonfiction texts. Thank you parents for your fee donation so that we can have this awesome resource in our room!We recalled text features in nonfiction text, such as headings, captions, diagrams, bold words, and labels. These items help us make predictions and draw conclusions.  Students also worked to define vocabulary words and other key terms using context clues and knowledge of prefixes and suffixes. When using context clues to understand the text, ask your child Are there any clues around the word to help you figure out the meaning? What can you use to help you find the meaning of this word?

Writing– We finished up our unit on double negatives. Remember…. don’t be a Negative Nancy! No, not, never, none, nothing, barely, scarcely, and hardly are all negative words. When writing, ask your child What is a double negative? Our week wrapped up with beginning our research writing prompt on the ocean! Today we filled out KWL (what we KNOW, what we WANT to learn, and what we LEARN) graphic organizer to help direct our research in the library next week.

Social Studies– We reflected on some of our knowledge from 4th grade as we compared similarities and differences between Jamestown and Henricus. We’ve learned some interesting facts about the Citie of Henricus. Did you know that Henricus was the home to the first English colonist hospital called Mount Malady! When talking about Henricus at home, as your child What is the significance of the settlement of Henricus? What were the contributions of Thomas Dale, John Rolfe, and Pocahontas to the history of Henrico?
