Huge thanks to Mr. Clough (ITRT) for this awesome lesson idea! Second graders at Carver Elementary have been learning about subtraction in Math, and they’ve been studying American Indians in Social Studies. Students in Mrs. Atkinson and Ms. Moore’s classes created American Indian math animations. First we opened Pixie, and we quickly picked which Indian tribe they were going to animate. We then painted the environment for each tribe. After the students painted the background, we went to stickers, and I showed them where the American Indian stickers were located. They added images of the Indians, their homes, plants, and animals. Then we created a subtraction problem based on the stickers they selected. Next the students clicked File > Duplicate to make a copy of the picture, and they typed the answer to their subtraction problem. They also deleted the corresponding number of stickers. We exported the two pictures as JPG files, then went to GIFMaker and uploaded the image files. GIFMaker turns still photos into an animated GIF file. Once the GIF files had been created and downloaded, they sent them to me using the Google Work Collector! Check out these two samples from Brayden and Lania.
