Animal Research Claymations

Robin Milwit, Kindergarten teacher at Greenwood Elementary, approached the librarian and I with a great idea a couple weeks ago. She wanted to have the students conduct research on an animal of their choice and present it in a creative way. To do this, they used a variety of print and web resources, such as PebbleGo. After researching their animal, the students collaborated to draw a habitat for their animal. Next, they constructed their animals and supporting details (other plants and animals in the habitat) out of clay. When the clay dried, the students were able to go back and paint their creations. Then they worked with their teacher to write a script from their research. Finally, we used the Stop Motion App on the iPad to take between 40-100 pictures, slightly moving the animals in each frame. Students went back and took turns recording their voice to explain what they had learned about their animal. With the help of the librarian, classroom teacher, Glen Allen HS student, and myself, we were able to each work with a group and complete this project in no time!! True collaboration from the students and teachers! Take a look at their finished products:
