Force & Friction in Discovery Science

The students in Ms. McNamee’s 5th grade class have been reviewing the 4th grade SOL’s on force and motion. Today we conducted some virtual labs through Discovery Education. To access Discovery, just log into the computer, click on Google Chrome (this will automatically take students to the Clever screen), click to log-in with active directory, and then click on Discovery Science. From there, students navigated to the force and motion category under Physical Science and clicked on the About Force exploration. In this exploration, students play a tug-of-war style game using different size trains to see how a force changes the speed and direction of the object. They recorded their results on the recording sheet provided in Discovery Science under student resources.

In the next exploration, students investigated how different surfaces affect the movement of the block. They realized that sandpaper would produce the most friction on the object, and a slick, metal surface would have the least amount of friction. We incorporated some measurement skills as well and had students record, either in centimeters or inches, how far the object moved.

Tomorrow they are going to this PBS Kids website to build their own roller coaster and explore kinetic vs. potential energy.
