Word Family Movies in Pixie

The students in Mrs. Milwit’s Kindergarten class have been working on word families, but they are also working on writing complete sentences. To achieve this goal, we used the Pixie app on the iPads today. Mrs. Milwit labeled each iPad with a different word family feature so that when we exported all the words for that family would be in the same book. The students could use one of the sample cards to build their sentence, or they could think of their own word with that feature to include in their sentence. Using the text tool, they typed their sentence with a capital letter to start and a period to end. Then they click on the settings gear and recorded their voice. Next they added an illustration to go with their sentence. Some students used stickers (clip art), others took photos with the camera, some drew with the paint tools, or a any combination of these options. As students rotated to this station, they kept adding pages to the word family book. At the end of rotations, we exported the pages as a movie and saved it to the camera roll. From there, I sent the video to my computer using the Send Anywhere app. Finally, I pieced the videos and pictures together in Windows Movie Maker and uploaded the video to Vimeo. Take a look at their finished product!
