The Great Tree Diagram Challenge

Mrs. Fitzer’s 5th Grade students at Greenwood began their unit on tree diagrams today. To get them engaged in the topic, we watch this Math on the Spot video about using tree diagrams to decide on a treat at Sweet Frog.

Toward the end of the video, students were asked to assist me with determining which combination of gummies and syrup I could put on my frozen yogurt. To do this, they clicked on the Spot Check and added the Google Slides presentation to their Google Drive. They then made a copy and completed the spot check. Here is a sample of a completed tree diagram.

Her class did such a nice job on the spot check that Mrs. Fitzer and I decided to challenge the students to collaborate with a partner to create their own tree diagram. They were asked to think of a time when they need to make choices and go from there. The ideas were fantastic!! One group settled on going to see a movie because they have to first choose the movie, then choose the snack, and then choose the drink. Another group planned out a meal with the type of protein as the first choice, and the side items as the second choice. They planned on paper and then published their tree diagram using Google Slides.

Mrs. Fitzer and I assisted students with inserting corresponding pictures for their diagrams. They had to go to art class, but they will continue working throughout the week and post their finished links to their Google Classroom. Here is one of the finished examples! Great job Mrs. Fitzer’s class!!
