Commutative and Identity Properties

In 3rd grade at Short Pump Elementary they were talking about the commutative and identity properties of addition.  I wanted to make this lesson as fun as possible, so I thought to myself…hmm what could make a lesson on this photo IMG_3376_zpsvumbhe21.jpgmore fun, maybe iPads!  I really love the app Videolicious and so do the kids!  I have to thank Julie Smith for showing me the awesome app!  This app is so easy to use and can be used across the curriculum with any grade level.

To start the lesson the class and I discussed the difference between the commutative and identity property when talking about addition.  Even though they hadn’t started on multiplication I talked to them about how it works exactly the same in multiplication.  At Short Pump second grade received a grant for 14 iPad Minis, so I borrowed those for the lesson.  I had the students make math problems using tangible things around the classroom, pens, pencils, markers, erasers, or anything they could find.  They had to make at least one example of each property and take individual pictures of each problem they come up with.

Once the students had the pictures they opened the Videolicious app and started putting together their video.  They selected their pictures, recorded a voice over, and then selected the music to go behind their video.  The students had a blast and hopefully will remember this activity when they start working on the commutative and identity properties of multiplication! photo IMG_3378_zpsxcpmevze.jpg
