We went shopping in Mrs. Kelley’s 4th grade class at Dumbarton Elementary. Karen Hues, a great Henrico County Elementary ITRT, did an awesome lesson with one of her teachers that I took and changed up. Karen’s lesson focused on place value with decimals, but Mrs. Kelley wanted to work on rounding decimals.
I went to Target to take pictures of different items for sale, DVDs, bikes, video games, and other great things they have there. I also took a picture of the price tag. I used PhotoShop to not only attach the price tag, but to alter the prices a little. I wanted to make it a little more difficult for the students to find the answers. I then took the pictures and put them into a presentation using Google Slides. I changed the place that the students had to round on each slide, and on a few slides I had the students round to two different places.
I shared the presentation with the students and showed them how to make a copy to edit. The students solved all of the problems on the slideshow and then went over to MoveNote to finish up the lesson. The students recorded themselves explaining their work using MoveNote. This is a great tool because 1. Students LOVE seeing themselves in videos (ha), and 2. You can have the students explain their thought processes on basically any topic in a super time effective way! After using MoveNote the students went to a shared Google Doc to post a link to their MoveNote videos. These kids really rocked it!!
