At Mehfoud Elementary they are talking all about plants in first grade. Mrs. Jones always has her first graders do some hands on learning with plants during this time, and we had an idea to bring some technology into the lesson. While the students were inspecting the different parts of the plants and drawing/labeling their own plant diagram they were also taking pictures of the process with iPads.
The next day the students made a title slide using DoodleBuddy. Once we had the title slide good to go the students opened up the app Videolicious. This is an awesome app that allows you to make a video/slideshow from pictures located on the iPad’s camera roll. The students selected the pictures that they wanted to use carefully, because when selecting pictures order does matter. Videolicious allows you to record a quick introduction to the video within the app, and then you can easily record a voice over on the pictures you have selected. The students saved the videos to the camera roll, and then they were good to go!
Mrs. Jones and I reminded the students to share the important functions of each part of the plant. We wanted the students to do this for two reasons. It was a great way for the students to share their knowledge on the subject. We are also going to share the videos with the other first grade classes here at Mehfoud. Mrs. Jones was a little ahead in her pacing, so the other classes will benefit from watching these videos when they get to their study of plants.
