Trading Cards for Making Inferences

Ms. Ketcham’s 2nd graders have been learning about making inferences. We used the trading card website from Big Huge Labs to create inferring cards about emotions. First, we kicked off the lesson by viewing and discussing some commercials that required us to make some inferences. Next, we brainstormed a list of emotions people might possibly feel/express on a day to day basis. Then we began make our trading cards. Each child chose an emotion to express as they took a selfie using the Dell Webcam. We uploaded their picture to the website, added their name, trading card question and sentence clues. Students were challenged NOT to use their emotion term in their sentences since they wanted someone to guess their emotion by looking at the picture and the words. This is a VERY hard concept for children this age. Ms. Ketcham’s 2nd graders did a fabulous job:

I really like this website because students can create “trading cards” for all sorts of content. Do you use task cards in your classroom? Then why not use student generated task cards!
