Windows Movie Maker Book Trailers

For the past few weeks I have been working with Ms. Nicholson and Mrs. Hamlin at Carver Elementary on an exciting project. The students have been reading different novels in class and their culminating final project was to create a book trailer using Windows Movie Maker. We’ve spent about 3 class sessions working on this project.

The first step was create their storyboard. The students were instructed to come up with fourteen slides using both text and images and then a credits page. After their storyboard was ready they began searching for copyright free images. Most found images they liked on Britannica Image Quest and some used the Dell Webcam to take pictures from inside their books.

During our second session we briefly looked at the features of Windows Movie Maker and then these 5th graders took off on their own and started creating their trailers. Most were practically done by the end of this session but they still needed to edit and add music to their trailer.

During our final session the students checked their work one last time, previewed their video to make sure their transitions and effects flowed and then finally they added music to their trailer. Lastly they published to their desktops, uploaded them to Google Drive and shared them with Mrs. Hamlin and myself. To be honest Mrs. Hamlin and myself were amazed at their final products, Mrs. Hamlin had always used iMovie in the past to make book trailers so she was a bit nervous about switching to Windows Movie Maker! Check out some of their finished products!
