I had an opportunity to work with several classrooms and introduce the Hour of Code. I began with a real world connection by asking the children if they played video games. I then asked if they wondered how the video games were created which was a perfect segue into coding. I had a flipchart I shared which focused on a coding activity using graph paper. We discussed the words “algorithm” and “program”. The children helped me turn algorithms into a program by using arrows to direct me in creating a graph where I had a to color in certain boxes. After a couple of whole group examples, the children transitioned into the activity working with a partner. Afterwards, the students played online coding tutorials found on code.org. Below are some photos taken during the lessons.
