Tuesday, November 11th was Mehfoud’s second annual STEM Night. It was such a blast! Students bring their relatives and friends to Mehfoud during the evening to participate in some hands-on learning. It was amazing to see the students showing their parents how they could solve different problems at the various stations throughout the school.
In the library students and parents chose a country or continent to research. Once the had researched the place of their choice they used the iPads to create a postcard using Pixie. Since most of the adults had not used Pixie before I loved watching the students show their parents how to do things with the app.
In the cafeteria there were two stations. There was a Keva block challenge where everyone was tasked with building the tallest freestanding structure they could with only 30 Keva blocks. Once the tower was built they were to measure it using a ruler and record their data on a chart in the cafeteria. On the other side of the cafeteria families were conducting experiments that helped them to explore the different properties of candy. There were various experiments set up with directions the families could easily follow.
The atrium was where students worked with their families to build things out of Lego bricks. They were challenged to pick one of eleven task cards with different activities listed on each one. Some of the choices they had were building a maze, structure that they have seen before, or a self portrait.
Of course no STEM night would be complete without Children’s Engineering! In the STEM lab everyone was building musical instruments out of various recycled materials, rubber bands, beans, and tape. You could hear everyone working great together and having fun all the way down the hall.
I can’t wait until the next STEM night at Mehfoud!
