Making Change Video Story Problems

Today in Mrs. West’s third grade class at Short Pump Elementary School we made video story problems! They are currently learning about making change, so we used a few different tools to create our making change video story problems.

First, the students planned their problem on paper by figuring out what they were going to buy, how much each item would cost, what the total cost would be, and how much change they would receive. Since they are still learning about making change we decided to have all of the students “pay” with $5.

Once the students had their plan we used Dell Webcam Central to take three pictures. They took a picture of them holding the first item, one holding the second item, and one of them with their $5 bill. We didn’t have any fake money, so we improvised with Monopoly money. Once the students had their three pictures they dragged them out of Dell Webcam Central onto their desktop. From their desktop we imported the pictures into Windows Movie Maker by dragging them in.

While in Movie Maker the students added a title slide and text to their pictures telling the cost of the item, as well as asking how much change a person would receive if they paid with $5. They published the movie, saved it to their desktop, and then uploaded it to my Google Drive by using the Google Work Collector. Once I had all of the videos I put them on a Padlet Wall so the students could answer each other’s questions.

Everyone did so wonderful with everything! I couldn’t be happier with how the final products turned out! Check out our Padlet Wall below.  Mrs. West and her class did an AWESOME job!
