Mrs. Hall’s Students Travel to Egypt Mathematically!

I was excited when Mrs. Hall invited me into her classroom to work with her 2nd graders! When we discussed our game plan she asked for a lesson on place value! I will be honest I was so excited for a lesson that wasn’t centered around logging into Google or the Dells! Little did I know how awesome this lesson would turn out! Since I am still new to HCPS I wanted to use a program already loaded onto the Dell so that I could become more familiar with it. Pixie seemed like the best option! I recently discovered the activities folder within Pixie and so I started there. Inside the Math folder I found a ready-made-template on Place Value Hieroglyphics. The students took 2-digit standard form numbers and broke them down into expanded form using the hieroglyphic symbol. It was amazing!

Prior to our Pixie portion of the lesson we traveled to Egypt (SOL 2.1) by way of The Children’s University of Manchester. This interesting website taught us all about where hieroglyphics began, what the symbols mean and how the Egyptian language reads differently than the English language. The website also let the children practice typing their name and it translated it into hieroglyphics.

It really was an awesome lesson! Mrs. Hall’s students were AMAZING and we had so much fun learning about Egpyt and practicing our place value skills at the same time! I can’t wait to come back! Check out these images below from our lesson!
