Brain Breaks with GoNoodle

I love being an ITRT. However, there are sometimes I wish I had a DeLorean that I could bring up to 88 mph and travel back to when I was in a classroom. I usually get this feeling when I find something new that I would have loved to use in my class. I got that Marty McFly type feeling when I saw GoNoodle.

GoNoodle is a website that allows students structured brain breaks. There are activities that get your students’ energy levels up on those days when they come in sleepy. There are also activities that calm your students and focus them for the rest of the day. The best part is each activity is no longer than 5 minutes. Oh I just lied. The real best part is that it’s FREE!

Once the account is created you choose a Champ. These are monsters that grow over time as you accrue time doing activities in the program.

There are many different games to choose from. Here are just 3 of the many games your class can choose from for a brain break.

Air time is a relaxation game. Peaceful music plays while a bubble moves through the sky. At the end of a session the students will notice that the bubble moved across the United States. They will then get a fun postcard with a fact from the bubble’s destination.

100M sprint if a fun way to get your students up and moving. Lolo Jones gives the students a pep talk, and then the students are off to the races.

Boogie Down is a dancing game. Students will have a blast with the fun dance moves the character has them perform. This would be a great game after a long day of testing!

When a game is completed time is earned, which fills up the meter.

Once the meter is filled your Champ then transforms.

I know some of you are thinking that this sounds great but it is too late in the year to try something new. I say not at all! It’s the end of the year and we are in testing mode. Students are sitting in their seats for long periods of time while we do test prep. Give your students 5 minute breaks to get up and move. I think you’ll be surprised by the quality of the work the students produce after a brain break.
