Kindergarten Number Sense Movies

Screen shot 2014-02-11 at 3.10.29 PMAs I like to do, I want to give a big THANK YOU to Mrs. Parsley at Carver Elementary today for letting me jump into her class and try a new App I have never tried with the students today! Mrs. Parsley has done this Number Walk Lesson before, but she wanted to add a little more spice. I wanted to use iMovie on the iPads, but sadly, for some reason, iMovie isn’t a free download when you update your iPad2 to the new iOS7, so I had to try something different. I found this FREE easy to use movie making app called Cute CUT. The free version allows for up to 30 second videos, and it seamlessly exports the completed videos to the Photo Gallery!

Last week, Mrs. Parsley had her class split up into partners and assigned them a “Magic Number.” Each group had to construct a children’s engineering activity of sorts to represent an addition problem that would equal their number. Afterwards, the class conducted a Numbers Walk around the school with their iPads taking a few pictures of items that represent their number. Today, we pulled out the Cute CUT App on each groups’ iPad they used for the Number Walk. We imported the pictures and then recorded our voices to go along with our pictures. We had a few minor hiccups along the way learning the ins and outs of how the App would work with 18 little fingers clicking away. We also learned, for kindergarteners, it would be easier to insert one picture at a time, and then record the audio for that individual picture. In doing so, it will make it much easier with editing how long a picture should show with the audio. Overall, Mrs. Parsley and I were super excited with what the students created, and we cannot wait to use Cute CUT again for another project! Check out some of the students’ work!

Here’s the example I showed the students to give them idea of what we were going to complete:
