Split Screen Web Browser? Yes, Please!

Julie Goode, one of our Elementary ITRTs, just posted about this, and it was too “Goode” not to write my own post about it!

If you are a fan of using many Internet Tabs on your browser, this is definitely the extension for you. This extension will do exactly what is says it does. It will split your internet web page into two screens. For me, flipping back and forth between tabs is fine, but this definitely takes it to the next level.

To add this extension to your Chrome Browser, click this link: Split Screen Click the Blue “Free” Button to Download the Extension, and it will pop up in your web browser. It will be a little icon that looks like a computer. Simply click the computer, and a new split screen webpage will open up for you to use.

This could be a great way to have students watching and video in one webpage while having a Today’s Meet Backchannel Discussion about the movie while they are watching.

One of my favorite features of this extension: if you don’t put a website into the split screen browser, the screen will automatically act as a notepad to take notes! You could have students use a research site such as PebbleGo and take notes directly next to the website. Once finished, the students could copy/paste their research information into a Google Doc or Pages Document.

Another idea would be to make a Quiz, Test, or Discussion Questions and save them as a PDF (or find one on the internet!). Simply upload the PDF you made to your Google Drive account and use the link it creates. Students can then record their answers in the Notepad in the Split Screen and screenshot their answers for the teacher, or they can log into a Google Doc in the split screen and directly answer the questions.

Quick Tip: Make sure you zoom out a little bit, so you can see more of the webpages that you are trying to view by pressing ⌘- or Command plus the minus key. Regardless of what you do, students will get the practice of using split screen when it comes to taking those SOL Tests! Alright, its time for me to split! (Really bad pun intended….)
