Making Inferences

Last week Mrs. Pascucci invited me to her 5th grade classroom to do a lesson on making inferences. We first talked about what an “inference” is and why it is important to use our background knowledge to help us piece together clues about interactions with people, things we view and texts we read. I LOVED how many different reading strategies blended together in this lesson: making inferences, drawing conclusions, pulling out the main idea, sifting through details, etc..

First, we had a BALL viewing these three commercials and making inferences about what had happened. Click {HERE} to take you to the commercials that can be found on Classroom Magic’s blog. You have to override the the filter for these videos. HERE are directions one of the ITRTs created for accessing blocked YouTube videos.

Next, we discussed how characters in movies and books show emotion without the author TELLING you what they are feeling. We each picked an emotion and used Comic Life to create a “Make an Inference” poster that gave clues about how we were feeling. Everyone really had to use their imagination with this project!
