One tool that is super easy and fun for kids to use is Gotbrainy.com. Students search for images to upload and type sentences using their word. These would be great posters to hang around your room or up on your word wall. Students could even make a Flipsnack digital magazine of their words! Here are some examples:
When I teach vocabulary to younger students I like to really focus on teaching context clues to discover the meaning of unfamiliar words. A fun lesson is to come up with nonsense words and have your students guess the meaning. Start with a vague sentence. Slowly add more and more context around the nonsense word and students can either keep their guess or change their guess as the sentence expands. Once strong context has been added to the sentence, all students should have similar guesses. Here is a flipsnack example of one round using the nonsense word: zar.
We played this game as an ITRT team yesterday and everyone made their guesses on a virtual Padlet wall. This would be a great tool to use with your context clue lesson so everyone can see how others think. Check out the last round of guesses:
