QR Codes in Kindergarten?!?!

OF COURSE!

Mrs. Gregory’s kindergarten class at Carver Elementary fell in love with using QR Codes after one lesson. Her class is learning about shapes.  Mrs. Gregory and I talked about how the students sometimes have a tough time understanding that an “upside down” triangle is, in fact, a triangle.  After more talk we decided that we could have the students go on a QR Code Triangle Hunt.

Using the iPads and a QR Code Reader App, the students would scan one of the QR Codes.  The QR code that we made would take the students to a picture of a triangle or a shape that wasn’t a triangle.  After scanning the code, they would walk back to their recording sheet, draw the shape they scanned, and circle the thumbs up or the thumbs down picture.  After every student had completed the activity, the class met together to discuss their answers and describe why or why not they felt the shapes they scanned were or were not triangles.

Here’s an example of one that the students had to scan:

My favorite part about this activity is that Mrs. Gregory only had to show the first four students how to use the QR Code Reader App.  After these students finished their work, it was their job to teach the next student how to use the App.  It was great to see these 5 year olds teaching each other how to use the technology.  It was really amazing to see these students owning their work and their job of being the “teacher.”

If you would like to do this activity, here’s the recording sheet the students used in class: Is it a triangle?

Check out this quick clip of the activity!
