Figuring out fractions and decimals can be no small feat, but not for Mrs. Graham’s 5th-grade class! In small groups, students used the iPads to solve clues embedded in QR codes to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the school to complete a series of fraction and decimal tasks. These tasks included:
* Determining the discount of a meal using a coupon at a restaurant then making a video describing how they arrived at their answer
* Helping the librarian by putting a selection of non-fiction books in decimal order then taking a picture of the books on the shelf
* Interviewing selected school personnel (principal, clinician, financial secretary) about their use of fractions and decimals in their work
* Viewing a video about fractions found in the art of Piet Mondrian and creating their own work of fraction art
* Skyping with an electrical contractor about the use of fractions and decimals in his everyday work
Students not only were engaged by working collaboratively in small groups with a new technology that their teacher had leveraged in a creative way, but they also definitely had a much better grasp of the content at hand due to the unique way Mrs. Graham went about delivering the material. Kudos!
