Winter Holidays Around the World and At Home

Summary

This lesson was created to help students have a deeper understanding of winter holidays around the world and in their own homes. Students researched winter holidays on the computer, generated a list of holidays, selected a specific holiday group to join, and planned with their group how to best show what they learned.

TIPC Ratings

This lesson is Ideal in Research and Information Fluency. Students constructed their own questions about the holiday to research and then chose appropriate resources to gather information. Students were able to use holiday books, people or a list of websites located on the class blog. Students then had to transfer that learning into a visual display for a group project

This lesson is Ideal in Communication and Collaboration. Students chose teams based on the holiday that they wanted to learn more about. Within their teams they chose how they were going to accomplish the task and communicate the information. The class blog was used for research before and during the project and reflection at the end of the project. Students collaborated as they worked on their products and synthesized their learning and ideas.

This lesson is Approaching in Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. Students were in charge of selecting digital tools to use when creating their projects. Some groups were larger than others and had to rethink how to work together and come up with a cohesive product. The groups generated their own questions to research and justified why they chose the resources and created the final product. Students reflected on the critical thinking process on the blog.

This lesson is Approaching in Creativity and Innovation. Students were told to create individual displays that showcased learning about their holiday of choice. . It was required that each group work together to create a Pixie page that had the holiday, a labeled photograph of each student, and three facts about the chosen holiday. After that, students were open to be creative beyond the assignment parameters.
