Making an eBook using ePub

PLN members.  I have just been shown the wonders of iWorks’ Pages and making an eBook.  If you have Pages ’09 you already have a conversion tool to make your document an ebook, it is in the export menu and says “ePub”.  You can find a template already formatted on the web for the ’09 version. My district still uses Pages ’08 version, and I could not find a template formatted correctly for ’08 so I made one.  Attached you will find a Pages ’08 Template explaining the formatting of an ePub document.  With Pages ’09 all you would need to do would be to export into epub format, drag to iTunes, sync your iTunes to your hand held-  Touch or iPad and your eBook will show up in the free App called iBooks.

For Pages ’08 it isn’t quite that simple, but I found a really easy fix.  Using this website (http://ebook.online-convert.com/convert-to-epub), I can upload the PDF version of my document, and it converts beautifully.  You can also use Word saved to a PDF as long as it is formatted with Table of Contents, and uses Title and Heading formats.

I am updating the Template I made-  Please check back tomorrow.  This template isn’t perfect-  trying to get it right!!

The main thing to see in this template is that if formatted correctly, the Table of Contents will be interactive when on the iPad or iTouch.  It uses the Title formatting, as well as Heading and sub headings.  The body of the document can contain pictures, text and captions if needed.  In the next week, I will work with some teacher to write some content for our Social Studies SOLs, to be used for review and for literacy centers.
