I hope you all had a relaxing, fun-filled Spring Break!  I enjoyed hearing about all of the adventures that students had on Monday!

It’s difficult to believe, but we are in the final stretch, the last nine weeks of fifth grade!  While summer is beckoning, we still have lots of important material to cover before we are ready to send our students off to summer and middle school.  Please continue to impress upon your child the importance of completing classwork assignments and homework as well as staying focused and attentive during instruction.

Next Wednesday, the library will be hosting two virtual sessions on embryology – a.k.a.- Mrs. Harris is hatching chick eggs again this year.  During this optional virtual session, Mrs. Carter Humphreys from the Virginia Cooperative Extension/Henrico 4-H liaison will lead these fun and informative sessions.  Mrs. Humphreys is a former educator and a great public speaker.

K-2 students can join the Library Teams link on Wednesday April 21 at 1pm

3-5 students can join the Library Teams link (Mrs. Harris’ Teams Link)  Wednesday April 21st at 1:40

Dates to Remember:

4/19 – Energy, Force, and Motion Quiz

4/20 – Southwest Region States and Capitals Quiz

4/23 – Word Trek Lesson 26 Quizzes

4/27 – Electricity Quiz

4/29 – Math Area, Perimeter, and Volume Test

MATH

We will be learning about area, perimeter, and volume of squares, rectangles, and triangles this week.  Your student should have notes in their notebook for these.  Be sure to also refer to the student resource folder and the portaportal sites to review these concepts.  A test on this material will be on Thursday, April 29th.

LANGUAGE ARTS

We finished Esperanza Rising!  It is such a beautifully written book!  There will be an open book test on Tuesday.  If you are a virtual student please have this book as well as Running Out of Time, if you haven’t turned it in yet, in a plastic bag on your porch ready for me or another classmate to pick up on Wednesday afternoon.  Our next novel, The Phantom Tollbooth, will be delivered to our virtual students on Wednesday as well.  We will be reviewing point of view and other skills as we prepared for end of the year testing.  We will also continue writing poetry with a diamante, haiku, and limerick.

SCIENCE

We will wrap up our unit on energy, force, and motion in science this week.  A quiz on these topics is scheduled for Monday, April 19th.  Your student should have notes in their notebook.  Be sure to alse utilize the notes and study guides in the student resources folder, as well as the fun review sites on portaportal to prepare for the quiz.  We will then begin learning all about static electricity, circuits, and current electricity.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The Southwest Region will continue to be our focus in Social Studies.  We will be learning all about the climate, natural resources, significant landmarks, and economic opportunities of the region.  A quiz on the map location of the four Southwest states and the capital of each state will be on Tuesday, April 20th.  The quiz will also incorporate states and capitals from previous regions studied (Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest) so students should review the states and capitals of those regions as well.  The “Tour the States” song on the portaportal site is a great way to do this!
