We had a fantastic week in fifth grade! Students were busy as they demonstrated what they had learned as we wrapped up many units at the close of the third quarter. We really enjoyed our special visit from Camille Schrier, Miss America 2020 on Friday! She demonstrated some phenomenal experiments and explained how she developed and cultivated a love for science. It was the perfect way to end the week and the day before Spring Break.

We wish you all a safe, happy, and relaxing Spring Break! We look forward to seeing everyone on April 12 ready to begin the fourth and final quarter of fifth grade.

Dates to Remember:

4/5 – 4/9 Spring Break

4/12 –  PTA Spirit Night at Jimmy Johns

MATH

We will continue to learn about transformations and congruency with geometric figures this week.  Then we will review geometric shape vocabulary and move into area and perimeter of shapes at the end of the week.  There will be a test on transformation on Thursday, April 15.

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we will begin to review previously taught skills of recognizing the main idea and supporting details within a text as well as point of view and fact and opinion.  The students will also begin a group project called Appetizing Adjective Menu.  The students will create a restaurant menu using lots of adjectives to describe their dishes.  This is such a fun project!  We will have Word Trek this week.  Please encourage your student to go on Vocabulary A-Z for practice with their words.  April is Poetry Month!  The students will have the opportunity to utilize what they have learned about figurative language in creating a variety of different forms of poetry in the coming weeks.

SCIENCE

We are moving into force and motion in science this week.  Students will learn about kinetic and potential energy and understand how friction, force, speed, and position affect energy.  A quiz on force and motion is scheduled for Monday, April 19th.  The students will have notes in their notebooks and should also be using the notes and study guides in the student resources folder as well as the review sites on portaportal to prepare for the quiz.

SOCIAL STUDIES

It’s all about the Southwest Region in Social Studies this week.  We will learn the location of the four states that make up this region and the capital of each state.  Then we will move into the climate, natural resources, significant landmarks and economic opportunities of this region.  A quiz on the map location of the states and the states matched with their capitals will be on Tuesday, April 20th.
