Glance at a Golden Week 2.10-2.14

Happy Valentine’s Day families!heart claw We had a GREAT day in room 8! Students enjoyed many Valentine themed activities from reading Valentine stories, using our probability skills on Valentine packages of skittles, and building the tallest heart tower possible out of strips of construction paper. We wrapped up our day with a Valentine’s Celebration where we snacked on delicious treats, created a Valentine heart, passed out Valentine treats, and watching movies. Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies/volunteered to help make our celebration a success!
Earlier this week we enjoyed interacting with the 4th graders as they presented information on famous African Americans in a Living Wax Museum. Students learned many interesting facts during these reports. We look forward to being able to participate in this 4th grade tradition! Thanks 4th grade for putting together such an AWESOME presentation!

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- Students learned how to determine a characters traits in fictional writing this week. We listed to a variety of passages and discussed the actions of the character and then infered/drew conclusions on how the character would be feeling. An inference is when we use information the author has given us and fill in any missing information with what we know from experience.  As we move into next week, we will be using our new inferencing skills in nonfiction text.Writing- After reading the compents of poetry, we got first hand experience with writing our own poetry this week! Students listed descriptive words (adjectives) to use in their own poems about an animal and a summer activity. We will continue to explore descriptive words and creating our own poems next week.Math- This week we began our unit on probability! Students learned key vocabulary words such as impossible, unlikely, equally likely, most likely, and certain to discuss the likelihood of getting certain colors on spinners and sums for rolling dice. We also talked about how we use probability outside of school, for example discussing the weather. Head to these sites for additional practice with this skill: Probability Graphing Gumball Probability Slushy Sludger Vile Vendor Probability Wheel
Social Studies- Our Famous Americans unit wrapped up this week with the study of George Washington, George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and Jackie Robinson. This information will come in hand for our next STEAM activity this Monday, February 17th. Students will design and build a 3D model of one of these historical figures. Check out these great biographies, complete with read-aloud and quiz options (scroll to the bottom). George Washington Carver Biography Rosa Parks Biography George Washington Thurgood Marshall Biography Jackie Robinson Bio
