BRRRR! The chill in the air mixed with the excitement of the upcoming holidays has us pumped for next week! Our week began with wrapping up our Great Giving STEAM project. In November, students brainstormed ideas of items that could be made out of recyclable materials to be sold at our Great Giving Market. We worked to create divided pencil holders for classrooms. Students will have an opportunity to shop all of the Great Giving Day items on Thursday, December 19th.

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- This week we continued our focus on nonfiction text, but zeroed in on main idea  and supporting details  during our reading. We discussed how the main idea is the BIG picture of the passage and the supporting details, usually 3, describe the main idea. A stool is a great visual to help students understand how the supporting details support the main idea of a passage. Read Theory – Comprehension Practice Phonics games and videosWriting- Students worked to establish the different types of sentences used in writing. We learned about statementquestionexclamatoryand  command sentences. Head to Brainpop Jr. for an entertaining review on these 4 types of sentences!Math- We have begun to dive head first into double digit addition and subtraction this week! Students are mastering the “slice & dice” technique to keep their numbers organized while solving these problems. As we move into the new year, we will be applying these skills to estimating sums/differences and regrouping sums/differences.  2 digit addition  2 digit subtraction Number Concepts, Addition, Subtraction and Graphing Practice

Social Studies- This week we began learning about Native American tribes. We will be studying 3 different tribes (Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo) over the next few weeks.
