Glance at a Golden Week (9.18-9.22)

What a FUN week! We had so many opportunities to explore, imagine, and create, helping us understand our Science curriculum.

Thank you to all the families that donated items to help make all of these activities happen!

Tuesday we simulated the rock cycle using chocolate. YUM! We got to explore how sedimentary (compacting and cementing), metamorphic (heat and pressure), and igneous (melting and cooling) rocks are created. Check out our  rock cycle demonstration pictures to see us in action!

We had so much fun on our first Full STEAM Ahead half day!  Today we became engineers and received a challenge from General Stone to create a structure that would withstand a 7.1 magnitude quake, or 10 shakes in a Jello pan. We collaborated in teams to create a two story structure that included at least one square and one triangle using 30 toothpicks and 30 marshmallows. We brainstormed ideas, came to a consensus on one structure to build, and then put it into action! Click on the group of photos below for more pictures and videos of our engineering in action!

Our next STEAM day will be Monday, October 9th. I am so excited to see what we will create next!

A LOOK INTO ROOM 23:

In Reading this week, we continued to explore fiction text to help us summarize and explain plot elements. When summarizing, students should use the SWBST (Somebody Wanted But So Then) strategy. Using these components we are able to construct a short paragraph that tells us the overall theme, or summary of the book. We used a plot pyramid to discover the expositioninciting incidentrising actionclimaxfalling action, and resolution of the classic nursery rhyme Jack and Jill. Challenge your students to think about the change that is occuring in the text that they are reading. Lastly, we used our fictional texts to help us understand the meaning of multiple meaning words. When discussing the meaning of words in text, ask your student Are there any clues around the word to help you figure out the meaning? What can you use to help you find the meaning of this word?

We will continue to review run on sentences vs sentence fragments in Writing as we move into next week. Our next writing prompt will be a narrative using two truths, and one lie about ourselves. We had a blast trying to guess the lie in everyone’s two truths and a lie quick write.

We began our study of Henrico History this week in Social Studies. We learned that the original Henrico Shire has been divided into 9 counties and 3 cities that we currently know today.
