Glance at a Golden week

Greetings, Tiger Families!

We are in full swing here in 2nd grade! Here is the latest news for you:

  1. Parent Teacher conference time slots are filling up! The sign up sheet went home last Friday on green paper. Conferences are Thursday, November 10. The remaining times I have left are: 3:45, 4:45, 5:00, 5:30. If these times do not work for you, let me know. I am happy to figure out a better time or day that works best for both of us!
  2. Papa John’s Pizza Delivery Night is next Thursday!Let us help you by taking the night off from cooking, and you help us with the fundraiser! Win-Win! Place your order at www.pjrva.com/schools  Deadline for ordering is Wednesday by midnight!
  3. Map Projects are due on Thursday, November 3rd. We’ll have the maps on display for parents to come see at 1:00 that day. We hope you can join us!!
  4. Next week in Reading: We begin the focus skill of main idea. We’ll start by reading some fictional books and learn how to decide what the story is mostly about. The guiding questions students are asked about books are:
  •     What is the main idea of this paragraph/story?
  •     What is this passage MOSTLY about?
  •     Which sentence BEST tells what the story is about?
  •     What could be another title for this story?
  •     Which statement is best supported by the selection?
  •     What is the MOST important lesson the character learns?
  •     What is the main idea of the entire story?

New Word Study words will come home on Monday, and I’ll also email a copy of each group to you.

7. Math has us working on fact families and solving word problems. A fact family is 3 numbers that relate together and make 4 number sentences. For example: 3,4,7 would make the following number sentences:

  • 3+4=7
  • 4+3=7
  • 7-4+3
  • 7-3=4

8. Social Studies has us continuing the study of the world’s continents, oceans, and equator. Here is a link to online books for Maps study at home Pebble Go World On Maps

9. In Science, we’ll be discussing the concept of weathering and erosion. Weathering is the breaking down of rocks into small pieces, and erosion is the movement of rocks and rock pieces. 10. Next Wednesday, we’ll enjoy an in-house field trip from Towne Bank, doing a Making Money Count lesson. This one hour lesson is full of great information for 2nd graders! We look forward to it!
