Once a Jaguar, Always a Jaguar!

It was so wonderful to see all of our JES alumni at Back to School Night last night!  We love when you come back to see us!  🙂

I am also so happy to welcome Miss Walton back to the Johnson family for the semester!  Some of you will remember, Miss Walton was a 4th grade teacher at Johnson just a few years ago.  She is currently completing her master’s of education at VCU for School Counseling.  She will be doing her practicum with me this semester.  Please help me to welcome her back.  She will be doing individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom lessons.

Welcome back Miss Walton! 🙂

Growing Great Learners!

Welcome back teachers and students!  Our theme this year is Growing Great Learners!  We hope that you had a relaxing summer and are ready to grow with us this year.  We hope to see all of our students and parents at our Open House on August 29th and Back to School Night on September 19th.

Our first character trait we are focusing on at Johnson is RESPECT!  Ask your child what it means to respect themselves, others, learning, and property.  They will be earning JJ dollars and being recognized during classroom meetings for showing respect throughout the school.

New students ~ welcome to Johnson!  We’re so glad you’re here.  I can’t wait to meet each of you during new students lunches in September!

Spring is Here!

Johnson Jaguars have been hard at work and are ready for those tests!!! Students, do your best!  Believe in yourself!  We all do!

SCA wrapped up the year with our last meeting.  Thank you for all of the hard work you have done all year!  What a fun group we had this year!

Big Brothers, Big Sisters will have our end of the year celebration on June 10th at 1:15 in the cafeteria.  I know our students will miss our wonderful mentors over the summer!  We’re excited already to see you next year 🙂 Thank you for all that you do.

June 14th will be our last spirit day of the year for our character trait – self-control.  Remember to wear your blue and white!

Have a wonderful and safe summer! ~Mrs. Yonce 🙂

Happy 2013!

Happy 2013 students, parents, and staff!

A huge thank you to our JES staff and Echo Lake Elementary for sponsoring 71 students for our Giving Tree this year!  Our character trait for January is generosity and you were amazing models for our students!

Our 5th grade students are excited to meet with their middle school counselors on Friday.  Course request forms will go home on February 1st and are due back by February 8th.

The SCA will be helping this month to advertise a spirit day for our character trait of generosity on January 31st. They will also be counting box tops, and preparing for a community service learning project called “Pennies for Patients.” Look for more information to come home in February.

Also in February, my family will welcome our second little boy, Gavin Yonce, into the world.  Mrs. Dellinger will be my substitute until May.  Please call her with any questions regarding the counseling program and middle school transitions.

Career Month!!

Hey Jaguars!  November will be Career Month at Johnson Elementary and we are talking about having a positive attitude!  We are getting ready for our Career Day on November 19th and learning all about jobs our students could have one day!

The IB writing prompt will be November 13th at 8:00am.  All applications are due to me by November 30th.

We will be collecting canned goods for the Christmas Mother November 5th-December 4th.  Grade level boxes will be in the cafeteria.  Please support our community service project, if you are able to.  Let’s see which grade level can collect the most!

Don’t forget to keep turning in those box tops – the SCA is busy counting and raising money for our school!

Johnson Respect!

Hi Jaguars!  We had a busy September!  I have loved getting into the classrooms for our lessons and meeting our newest Jaguars in new student lunches. I am also very excited about Career Day coming up on November 19th!  I have so many fun careers for students to hear about.

SCA representatives were elected and had our first meeting.  Boy are they busy!  We counted box tops, were trained on working the JJ prize cart, wrote thank you notes, made International Night posters, and were given recycling assignments.  I appreciate all of the students’ hard work and dedication to Johnson!

Big Brothers, Big Sisters Mentoring has started again!  We have enjoyed seeing all of our bigs again.  We are fortunate to have so many wonderful mentors here every day!  So far this year we have 13 matches returning and 14 currently being matched.  Thank you BBBS staff and volunteers for all that you do!

International Baccalaureate applications have been distributed.  Students, remember they are due to me by November 30th.  Our writing prompt will be November 13th.

Welcome new Jaguars!

Welcome to all of our new Jaguars!  Did you know that we have over 50 new students at Johnson this year?  I have had so much fun getting to know all of our new students during New Student Group Lunches!

A reminder to all Jaguars, our character trait for September and October is respect!  Don’t forget to show respect for yourself, others, learning, and property every day.

Do you have a Big Brother or Big Sister?  We will have our Resume Meeting September 28th.  Your mentors will begin coming to see you each week after that.  They are excited to see you!  We have 17 continuing matches and 8 new matches so far this year!

SCA representatives from each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade class are being elected this week.  We will announce our 2012-2013 SCA members next week!

Jaguars Shine!

Our Jaguars are shining this spring!  We are so proud of all of the hard work they have done this year and all they have learned.  Keep up the hard work, students!  Our character trait for May and June is “self-control.”  We are learning that we are in control of our words, actions, attitudes, and future!!  Class lessons have been about personal space, positive communication, and goal setting.

Please join us this Saturday, May 19th from 8-12 in the Johnson cafeteria for our 2nd annual Yard Sale!!!   Johnson families have purchased tables and staff has donated lots of fun stuff!  Come see us rain or shine!

Keep shining Jaguars!  You are going to rock those tests!!! We believe in you!!!!

Spring Brings Responsibilities

Welcome back from break students!  We will be learning in lessons this month about responsibilities.  We will be working on study skills and test taking strategies.  In small groups, we are talking about conflict management, self-esteem, and coping.

Join us for a Monday in the Friendship Garden on April 23rd from 2:45-3:30 as part of our “Family Week.”  Staff and families will be sprucing up the garden in front of the library.  Bring your tools.  We will supply gloves and water.  Help us teach your children about their responsibility to our Earth!
