Editorial: Schedule change welcomed

Henrico County has implemented new school start times to improve transportation issues in the county. Instead of starting at 8:45 a.m., the tardy bell now rings 15 minutes later at 9 a.m.

The new schedule has had a positive effect on transportation, and it is a welcome change for students and faculty.

It is true that the bell was only pushed back 15 minutes in the morning, but that extra time makes it possible for many students and faculty to participate in morning meetings and tutoring sessions. Administrators can accomplish a few more tasks before school. In some cases, teachers arrive at school at the same time they always did and use the extra minutes to cut down on the time they spend after school.

Of course, some students simply use the extra 15 minutes in the morning to sleep, which can be beneficial.  Some teachers are reporting that they have fewer tardy students to their first class, and students are more alert.

This change has been a long time coming, but we hope it is here to stay.
