Editorial: Praise for Blue Devils’ Pit

The Blue Devils’ Pit is a great boost for athletics and school spirit.

The Pit is a spirit organization that took off last year when seniors began by promoting school spirit at basketball games. Now it has expanded to include other sports.

Other spirit organizations have failed. The key to the success of the Blue Devils’ Pit is the growing number of people and organizations that support it. Beta Club, PTSA and Athletic Boosters Club are supporters. Outside sponsors supply Pit participants with shirts and food.

According to a recent survey, 86 percent of students said the Blue Devils’ Pit is a good idea.  More than half of the students surveyed indicated their interest in joining the group.

Senior BETA member Amanda Young likes the Devils’ Pit for two reasons: she wants to be more involved with school activities during her senior year, and she wants to raise the bar of school spirit that other schools have set. Amanda describes the Pit as a family coming together to support the team. She said it is fun to see people come out of their comfort zones to cheer for their team.

The Blue Devils’ Pit also has a positive impact on athletes. Senior football players, who have experienced the Blue Devils’ Pit for the first time, said the group’s energy makes them want to play harder.

The Blue Devils’ Pit is an excellent way for Blue Devil fans to show their school spirit and pride. Of course, the group can always use more fans in the Pit. The more students who join, the louder Varina’s voice can become.

Our school needs you to join the Blue Devils’ Pit and show opponents that we are not a school without pride; we are a school with nothing but pride.
