Lady Devils ‘strike cancer out’

The varsity softball team hosted a game against Henrico to “Play for the Cure: Strike Cancer Out.”

The event raised $106 for two local non-profit organizations.

To honor individuals who have lost their battle to breast cancer, the girls wore pink ribbons and pink socks. The bases were painted pink, and the team made posters for breast cancer awareness.

Senior first baseman Elizabeth Bordonie said the event hit close to home because some of her family members have been diagnosed with cancer.

“I think ‘Play for the Cure’ is a good cause. A lot of people have family members who have been diagnosed with all different cancers,” Elizabeth said.

Every year the Lady Blue Devils “Play for the Cure” and charge for the game, but this year they also asked for donations for every out, error and run.

“We don’t want to make any mistakes, but then again it’s for a good cause,” junior right fielder Cali Hancock said.

The C.J. Thumbs Up Foundation, which was created in memory of Charlotte Jennie, and the Reese Strong foundation will share the proceeds. Both foundations help families pay for expenses while their family members fight cancer.

Coach Paige Lasky said that they chose these foundations because they help families like principal’s secretary Traci Evans’ family whose son is battling cancer.

“We had a lot of support, and the atmosphere was energized. We had a very encouraging crowd of fans,” Coach Lasky said.

The athletic department plans to host baseball, softball and soccer games at Rolfe and Elko to raise more money for the cure.

Junior outfielder Jessica Rickman said she hopes the team will continue to host the event annually.

“What we’re doing is a good thing because it’s helping us to learn how not to make mistakes and to get better at what we do, and we’re also helping out a charity,” Jessica said.
