Column: Responsibilities hinder final goodbyes

by Amber Blair

Summer vacation is only days ahead. For seniors headed to college, this may be one of the last summers at home.  Some of them will go on family vacations, chill with friends, hit up all of the local hot spots and just relax. Most seniors, however, won’t be spending their summer relaxing at all because many of them are heading off to summer school, training camps or work.

My senior friends and I have talked about hanging out one last time before we all go separate ways. Looking at our schedules, we found that time for hanging out together is easier said than done. We’re no longer in high school, we’re 18 and we have jobs, which mean more than likely our work hours will increase.

Additionally, many seniors spend various days at different colleges for new student orientation. Some popular schools like Old Dominion University, James Madison University and George Mason University have one-day orientations while other schools like Virginia Commonwealth University, North Carolina A&T State University and Hampton University have two or three-day orientations that all incoming freshmen must attend.

Some seniors will attend summer classes at their university to get a head start. Most summer classes begin in June, so new grads with diplomas still in hand will quickly head off to begin their college educations. Graduating football players may start football camp as early as July.

With work and college stuff, seniors will barely have time to breathe. Hanging out with friends may not be possible. I guess it’s all a part of growing up, gaining responsibilities and preparing for the next chapter of our lives.

Although this is the reality of our lives, having a little fun before heading off for good is important. Now is a good time to compare dates with friends and maybe even schedule orientations around the same time. Look at dates that everyone or at least the majority is free and maybe hit up the beach or have popcorn and movie night at the house. Whatever the plan, make sure to make time for relaxing with your friends and keeping the relationships strong.
