TIPC Ratings
Research & Information Fluency
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: In this project, students use the information that they pulled from the fiction text they read and synthesize it to create a trailer that excites other readers, as well as provides an overview of the important story elements. The students use iMovie and Popplet to create engaging displays of what they have learned.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: As students complete this project, they communicate and collaborate with their peers to produce a finished product that serves the purpose of exciting other readers and showcasing story elements. Students are asked to reflect and provide feedback on the effectiveness of the book trailers, which generates discussion of how students can grow further in the future.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students work collaboratively to question what will engage their audience in order to get them excited about reading their book. They also are required to problem solve in order to map out their text in a way that fits the theme they have chosen. This challenges them to think carefully about which information is important and which information can be removed. As students share their finished products, the “glows and grows” process allows students the opportunity to reflect on the positives of other peers’ projects so that they can set goals for how they would improve in the future.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: In this project, students synthesize their knowledge of story elements and the text that they read to create a book trailer that highlights key features. Students are given the freedom to explore the app and make decisions about what they think will fit their book trailer best. Throughout the process, questions from the teacher and their peers about their choices will help students seek ways to improve this project, as well as products they create in the future.
