What’s That Sound?

This lesson is for : Grade 5:

Summary

Help! Do you hear that sound in the hallway? What is it? Where is it coming from? This PBL will have your students investigating sources of sound and how it is transmitted. After conducting research and several different experiments, students will create a proposal for the school’s principal proposing how she can eliminate or buffer the sound. Students will choose their source of digital media to help assist with their proposal presentation.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students selected the most appropriate digital tools and information sources to powerfully display and interact with information involving their own investigation of sound.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students worked in self selected groups throughout this project and collaborated with another 5th grade class via Google Hangout as they explored sound: how it travels, how it is transmitted and its properties. They communicated their findings and proposals with the school principal who provided an anticipatory set for the PBL unit.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The authentic task was addressed throughout this unit as students explored ways to eliminate or buffer the mysterious sound in the hallway. They selected the most appropriate digital tools to help solve this task as well as reflect on their roles as critical thinkers and problem solvers through exit tickets and journaling.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students exhibited creativity and innovation as they synthesized existing knowledge of sound transmission to innovate a solution to the school’s problem. In addition, through exit tickets and journaling students reflected on this process and set goals for future growth.
