Summary

Students form groups and discuss modern-day examples of the Art Nouveau time period. The teacher demonstrates how to use visual bookmark using the website Pinterest. Students set up their account, using Pinterest like a digital journal of ideas, tutorials, and images related to Art Nouveau, getting a generic visual feel for the art style. The class watches the movie Moulin Rouge to see a performance representation of the music, costumes, art, of the time period and completes a webquest. After studying the period, students generate an original work of Art Nouveau art. The teacher provides some links as examples, and the students are free to use other sites of their choosing. Students assess the visual identity markers of Art Nouveau and then use tools such as but not limited to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Pinterest, sketchbooks, pencils, and found objects from nature to design a playing card that is functional, visually references the time period, and demonstrates each student’s personal aesthetic. Final projects are Art Nouveau Playing Cards, and are posted for discussion on student blogs, will hang in the Youth Art Month gallery exhibit, and will be included in college and job portfolios

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Using websites provided by the teacher along with their own discovered sites, students gather visual artifacts related to the time period. Students learn to use Pinterest to assemble a portfolio of historic artwork that fits the style of the time. They evaluate visual information for common denominators of motif and theme, and use the motifs that most appeal to to generate their own independent work.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students create and share their Pinterest portfolio boards to inform their final designs. They post their designs at intervals to their blogs or websites and comment or productively critique each other synchronously and asynchronously. Students use Google Drive folders to drop their work to the instructor.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students generate purposeful questions about a filmmakers intent, and the Art Nouveau period. They conduct digital research to evaluate the period and answer those questions by posting images and information to their own Pintrest boards. They justify their design decisions based on Pinterest visual reference boards and choice of a particular artist to dissect. As students progress through the design process, they question and critique each-other using blogs and websites.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students use web research Pintrest to evaluate art of the period They share Pinterest portfolios to provide a variety of inspiration and use found objects from nature to further inform their design. Students synthesize their information about the period and use traditional methods to begin sketching their ideas. They then use new skills in Photoshop to complete the final product. As they work toward a final product, students post their progress with pictures to blogs and websites where their peers provide comments. The final product is posted to their website or blog and given to the teacher via Google Drive.
