You’re the Curator – 7651

Summary

Students will look at select artworks from the VMFA collection (on the website). They will describe several pieces while looking for commonalities. They will use Wordle as a tool to help identify a theme and will then be grouped according to similar themes. In their groups, students will collaborate to create a Prezi presentation showing selected VMFA works with descriptions that show their theme.

TIPC Ratings

0 – Not observed: research was not a component in this lesson.

6 – Ideal: Students are working in Google Docs and in Prezi while using collaborative features. This lesson teaches students how to collaborate purposefully without supervision. Students are asked to develop norms, split roles, and reflect upon communication and collaboration that occurred within the lesson.

6 – Ideal: Students are working to solve a relevant problem. How do curators group pieces of art? They are using digital tools (Wordle) to help solve this problem. They have to adjust thinking as they get into groups and receive more sources of information from other members (pieces of art). The task is higher level in that it asks students to recognize patterns. Students also have to create and classify. Students come up with their own method of solving the problem in the end as they create a product that groups several pieces of art. Students are reflecting upon how they and their group did at solving this authentic task.

5 – Approaching: Students work to create a product. They are all products within Prezi. However, the final product is an original work. Students analyze trends within various art pieces and come up with a new way of grouping art.
