Nuke It! Microwave Cooking Lesson to 8th Graders — 8407

Summary

The Microwave lesson provided an interactive way for students to learn about the Microwave cooking.  Students are required to research microwave cooking through research on the internet, YouTube videos, selected websites and other sources found by the student as well as the manual for the microwaves they will be using in the classroom.  Students are then required to find an article on the history of microwaving and complete an article review. The final product required students to create a visually interesting presentation for middle school students.  A rubric is provided to guide the student as to the information to be included in the final product.

TIPC Ratings

Ideal Target — Teacher facilitates and formatively assesses authentic tasks where students are engaged in research and using information fluently to learn about microwave cooking, the workings of a microwave and safety techniques. The students then had to organize the information to present in a visually stimulating teaching tool for middle school students.

Ideal Target — Students were able to self-select their teams to collaborate with their research and creation of their presentation which included selection of their digital tools to create their presentation.

Approaching — Students will be required to use digital tools to research information, in addition they will need to use technical reading skills to interpret information and implement techniques to work a Microwave. Students will respond to higher level questions and interpret data and justify their decision to include information in the educational presentation geared to instructional level of middle school students.

Approaching — Students had a choice of presenting a presentation in any way they wanted. The student products that went beyond the assignment parameters included: movement, in-depth information, creative use of digital tools, and sound. research and synthesis.
