The students applied search techniques demonstrated by the teachers by walking through the halls to research pictures and words to find items depicting their “magic number.”

The students worked together find a partner and to decide on who would carry the iPad and take the first picture. Then they took turns so each child took part in the process. The paired students had to collaborate together to count and take pictures that would work for their number.

The each pair had to manipulate their materials to discover the different combinations of sets that would equal their number. Then they had to collaborate to decide on two sets to use for the model of their equation.

The children used recycled materials from our STREAM room to build two sets that equaled their number. They had to agree on what kinds of materials to use and how to place them on their base. The project had to have the “math sentence” (equation) attached to their project.
