Sink or Float – 7042

Summary

The class will conduct a group experiment with different materials to find out what happens when certain items are placed in water. Once students understand the sink/float concept, students will construct a boat using recycled materials and other requirements with the goal being that their boat will float. Pictures of the boats will be placed on a Google Form and the URL will be shared with other Kindergarten classes so that they can vote as to whether each boat will sink or float. The class will compile the results of each boat into a visual graph. Each group will then explain the outcome and share those results with the individuals who participated in the voting process.

TIPC Ratings

The teacher provided resources for research to allow the students to acquire the necessary information.

The teacher provided opportunities for students to work in groups. The students worked together to accomplish the task of creating a bloat that will float. The students also used digital tools, Google Forms, to communicate with the broader kindergarten community. The students were able to see what other kindergarten students hypothesized about their boats.

The students in this lesson had to justify their decision making and problem solving practices with other members of their group and the video for the blog. The students had to determine why their boat was successful or not in floating and explain why. The class was then pushed a little further to think how they could make improvements to their boat.

The students had to use the outcome of the group experiment to make predictions as to what materials would be best to construct a boat that would float. The students had to then work within the assignment parameters to make a boat.
