Censorship and Bias in the Media – 7840

Summary

This unit will discuss concepts of ethics, bias, and the political and social implications of censorship. The unit will include research in order to explore different world views and how media outlets shape said world view.

TIPC Ratings

Students will conduct research all throughout this unit. Students will use their laptops and the library. I will encourage students to use several sites and create a citation page. Students will also learn how to create and distribute their own research in the form of a newspaper or magazine. This project will also tie into how we create and distribute our school newspaper. Several articles may feature in our school newspaper.

The project that I mentioned will also require students to work together with other “journalists” and “editors” in the classroom. Students will also present their newspaper/magazine to the class and participate in student evaluations as a means of constructive criticism and deeper analysis and reflection of the material. This project will also tie into how we create and distribute our school newspaper. Several articles may feature in our school newspaper.

Students think about the real world implication of media ethics and censorship. Students must be able to compare and contrast various sources and draw conclusions about world view. Students must be able to recognize and analyze bias and censorship in the media. Students must research a real world problem through various sources to learn about and compare information. Students must be able to analyze their findings and create an objective and a subjective report to share with the class. Students must be able to assess other student findings.

Using self- expression in writing is creative. Students will also have a project assessment of creating their own mini- newspaper or magazine. They will have creative control of the look, style, and topic of this project.
