How Do You Connect – 7973

Summary

What do the 1960’s mean to you? It can be a difficult for students to understand the culture of a time period 50 years ago. The music and fashion of the 1960’s, and details of the Civil Rights Movement are important historical concepts that help students understand how American ideals developed. This project is intended to help students connect to and explore facets of the 1960’s through the lens of their own interests. Students were encouraged to explore the time period and create a project that would show how they connect to the history from that time.

TIPC Ratings

Target – Between the librarian and myself, I believe active facilitation took place with the students research and using information correctly. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the students caught on to the use of Onesearch and Easybib as well as their project choices including PowerPoint presentations and using the web for posters.

Approaching – Students did not work in collaborative groups to complete this project, but some students did work together to gain information about a similar topic they had chosen for it. Those students voluntarily completed their individual assignments together quite nicely.

Target – Students did a fine job selecting the most appropriate tools when working on the project. Their self-reflection on the project allowed them to think about what they would do the same and/or differently the next time a project was given to them in class. The teacher rubric was exact to the student reflection so that they were very aware of how they would be graded. The CD project is a prime example of the thought process that was required for students to think critically about their research and the song selections related to the 1960’s.

Developing – Though I was pleased with the student choices on projects, I did not feel as though they worked “outside of the box” so to speak. Those who completed powerpoints had previously worked with PowerPoint, and several chose to complete the writing tasks which did not really show innovation.
