River City Consulting Ad Campaign – 6402

Summary

Students worked in groups to create an advertising campaign for River City Consulting. Students were given a $3,000 budget and had to create a radio, television, and print ad. Their results were presented to a panel from River City Consulting, which included the owner of the company. The panel provided feedback for each team before choosing three finalists, whose ads were uploaded to YouTube for community voting. The winning commercial will be aired on local channels.

This lesson falls in the Ideal range for Research and Information Fluency, as students assembled and synthesized information to prepare the ad campaign and made choices to develop the final advertisements. The teacher provided guidance with necessary components and rubrics for assessment, as well as guidance about effective advertising. Students used this information to meet the goals of the project independently.

This lesson falls in the Ideal range for Communication and Collaboration, as students determined groups through a mock-interview process, where “project managers” hired for job descriptions which translated into roles for the group. Throughout, students found the methods that best suited the group to coordinate meetings and the production of content. At the end of the project, students used surveys to evaluate team members and their effectiveness in their given roles.

This lesson falls in the Ideal range for Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, as students had to work with community businesses to determine and analyze the needs of each business, the costs for preparing ads that would meet the interests of the target audience while still keeping within the budget, and the type of advertising that would best appeal to the target market. Based on their findings, students had to choose the most appropriate tools to prepare and present their ads.

This lesson falls in the Ideal range for Creativity and Innovation. Based on prior studies about advertising and the information gathered through research about the company and the target market, students created an original advertising campaign that included print, digital, and video products. Throughout, students reflected on their process and discussed their work with the panel from River City Consulting.
