Choosing a Green Car – 4256

Summary

This lesson was adapted from NCCTM lesson “Choosing a Green Car.” Students were given the authentic task of evaluating five different cars in terms of their impact on the environment and choosing the one which is the best “green” choice for Henrico County to purchase for their fleet. Students worked collaboratively to research the cars’ fuel usage and environmental impact, and graph and analyze the data. Using ActivEngage, the students were challenged to formulate and defend their recommendation for the car the County should choose.

TIPC Ratings

This lesson is Developing in Research and Information Fluency. The students were provided with an authentic task, evaluating impact of automobile on environment had local connection of Henrico County. The lesson provided opportunity for students to function independently as they assessed information from teacher selected internet sites to create tables, graphs, and written reflection.

This lesson is Developing in Communication and Collaboration. Students worked in teacher selected groups to accomplish authentic task. Digital tools were appropriate for facilitating collaboration within group.

This lesson is Approaching in Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. Students were posed with higher order questions and given time to discuss before sharing their responses on ActivEngage. The teacher used these student generated responses to spark discussion and further analysis.

Creativity and Innovation was not a focus of this lesson.
